There are certain questions that I hate when people ask me. They are benign questions with no ill will intended but I hate them none the less. When people ask me I either give them the answer they are expecting from what they know about me, smile, nod, and give a little laugh to brush off the question or...sometimes I answer honestly.
One of my students asked me one of those questions the other day and this day I decided to answer honestly. He thought I was joking at first and then realized that I was being serious. Ironically, this student also has a twin sister, so this led to more of a conversation. It felt great, like I wasn't lying, or trying to spare someone else's feelings while I felt sad inside like I was ignoring that part of my life and what happened. So, if you also have questions that you hate being asked, my advice is if you feel like answering honestly DO IT. It is not about the other person and they should accept the answer that they are given and not expect the answer they are expecting. Life is messy, unfair, and unscripted. Maybe being honest can help us all grow into more compassionate, understanding human #questions #conversations #truth #honest #advice #freeing
