A husband for spring, another for winter: white weddings for the white wagtail The white wagtail (Motacilla alba) is an insectivorous bird of open country, often near habitation and water. It prefers bare areas for feeding, where it can see and pursue its prey, as in my pic taken on the Atlantic shore in south-western France. The species is resident in the milder parts of its range such as Western Europe and the Mediterranean, but migratory in much of the rest of its range. Northern European breeders winter around the Mediterranean and in tropical and subtropical Africa, and Asiatic birds move to the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia. In spring, males who have secured a territory engage in courtship and try to seduce a female. In winter, wagtails also defend feeding territories. They arrive before sunrise and often left for the communal roost only after sunset. The boundaries between adjacent winter territories are clearly defined, as birds fight and perform threat display along the same boundaries over long periods. Many territories hold a pair of birds: a male, which is dominant, and a female. The first indication of pair formation is shown when a female does not fly away directly when attacked by the male, but retreats slowly, tilting its bill slightly upwards and emitting a quickly repeated, high call note. The female then intensifies her appeasement postures during the next few days, with the bill and tail pointing up and the wings drooped and quivering. The beginning of a lasting romance? Not at all. Winter pairs do not migrate and breed together. So why should a male let a female feed in its territory? In fact, during boundary disputes, the female supports its partner. However quite often a female changes its feeding grounds and pairs with a new male. Sometimes a female appeases two and even three males simultaneously, feeding in their territories. Sometimes a boundary between two females develop in the middle of a male’s territory, so that both females appease the same male but fight and threaten each other. Even more thrilling than in summer! #ro_teich #wagtail #kings_birds #total_birds #birds_illife #your_best_birds #whitewagtail #bergeronnette #birds_matter #nature_sultans #territory #bird_brilliance #courtship #eye_spy_birds #birdsofinstagram #allmightybirds #ig_discover_birdslife #nuts_about_birds #perfect_birds #bestnatureshots #pocket_birds #exclusive_animals #birdphotography #so_photo #bns_birds #best_birds_of_ig #motacilla #bergeronnettegrise #motacillaalba
