    Pale-vented Bush-hen are extremely sneaky, and usually stick to dense cover. Very excited to get our first decent shots of this species yesterday. We initially saw it crossing the path in a local park, and it then became intrigued by the shutter-noise of the camera and walked straight at us along the path for a closer look. . . . . . . #ip_birds #bns_birds #explore_wildlife #birdsofinstagram #green #perfect_birds #kings_birds #birdingphotography #wildlife #vogelfotografie #bird_brilliance #nature_brilliance #naturephotoportal #allmightybirds #live_love_wildlife #thebirdingsquad #wildlife_inspired #best_birds_of_ig #pocket_birds #planetbirds #your_best_birds #thewildlifebiologist #nuts_about_birds #birding_lounge #birds_captures #birds_adored #total_birds #feather_perfection #eye_spy_birds #shots_of_animals

Sanderling. I have always loved that name, the way it rolls off the tongue and into the surf. It whispers of the playfulness that embodies these plump little shorebirds. Captures the way they scramble over the sand in sync with the ever changing waterline. The Dutch name for these birds (they have a circumpolar range) is Drieteenstrandloper. It is equally definitive, for it means "three-toed beachrunner. And yes, they have three toes, all facing forward, which make it all the easier to run along the beach! This adaptation allows them to move and accelerate quickly to capture prey. I know we often complain of misnamed birds, but this time I think they got it right, and in two languages!
