Robert Siodmak - The Killers (1946)
Probably Siodmak's masterpiece this is an amazing noir movie, which works like a jigsaw puzzle, slowly falling into place in original ways. Instead of the usual flashback of the dying guy we get a lot of flashbacks from different witnesses to different bits of the story as the insurance investigator pieces together what led to the murder of our main character.
This is the film that also introduced Burt Lancaster as an ex-boxer in love with the lovely Ava Gardner. The film is pure noir, the cinematography is beautiful in its use of light and shadow, the boxing scenes with Lancaster. for example prefigure Scorsese's Raging Bull (there's also a scene where a dangerous gangster has a "do you think I'm funny" Goodfella's moment). It's a beautiful, extremely well acted and well constructed story, we know the end of the story since the beginning and the whole way in which the gaps are slowly filled is just amazing work. A true classic of the genre. #robertsiodmak #avagardner #insurance #mystery #cinephile #blackandwhite #burtlancaster #filmnoir #movie #crime #1940s #noir #film #screenshot #thriller #thekillers #cinema
