I traveled with a brave group in 30 degrees with lots of wind, from the Conference in Kearney, NE to photograph the bison and learn how they not only provide a great ecotourism opportunity for guests but, more importantly, are a vital piece to restoring and maintaining thousands of acres of historic prairie ecosystems. I LOVED IT! I have so many great, up close and cool photos of these amazing creatures. Stay tuned. Don’t forget to visit blog next week to read all about it! . . @visit_nebraska #ecotourism #adventuresofemptynesters #bison #cranetrust #athomeontheplains #suzanneinnebraska #plainssafaris #nebraska #conference

I LOVED IT! We then drove over to where the cows were (girl bison) to see if there were any new babies born. Not yet… There were a few that were only one or two years old. Once they saw us however, they started to go the other direction. Hard to put into words the sheer number of cranes there are during the annual Sandhill Crane Migration. #centralnebraska #cranetrust

Prehistoric Ghosts of the Platte: The bond between sandhill cranes and the Platte River runs deep within geologic history, almost 10,000-12,000 years. Cranes have been around for much longer, a species found at Nebraska’s Ashfall Fossil Beds was dated 10 million years old. This was a relative of the sandhill the oldest of which dates back to the Pliocene Epoch (2.5 mya). For the many visitors both human and animal that witness or partake in the month of Migration (March) along the Central Platte River Flyway, they have undoubtedly heard the echoes of an ancient bird; calling out from prairies or marshes or stretches of braided river. These habitats that sandhills and many other migratory species so heavily rely are crucial pitstops to rest and refuel along their arduous journeys. Through the countless efforts of individual stewards, conservation organizations and nature lovers alike working together to restore the Platte River’s many habitats, the sandhill cranes will be able to share their wisdom with us. And maybe the echoes of their past will have a chance to echo through the future to new generations of stewards. #rowesanctuary #savingcranes #stewards #cranetrust #naturalhistory #plattebasintimelapse #ancient #conservation #visitnebraska #platteriver #nebraska
