I was born and have always identified with being female. I was raised by a mother and father who taught me both traditional and untraditional gender roles. I can keep a house but I can also be handy. For that, I am grateful.
I was taught to never downplay your intelligence for anyone, especially men. For that, I am grateful.
I fell in love with a sport dominated by men. I played the sport aggressively and with passion. Because of this I was often bullied. I did it anyway. For that, I am grateful.
I chose a career overpopulated by women because it is seen as a caring, feminine, and sometimes "weak" field. Tell me again where you would be without that teacher, guiding you through your most important years? I have helped raise children for 12 years and counting. That is powerful and for that, I am grateful.
Today I will march for women everywhere. I have been a victim of bullying, harassment, and sexual abuse because of my chromosomes. I have learned to harness the power of being female and therefore take no shit from anyone. I am here to help break down the walls that continue to imprison others due to their gender. I am here to support women and men find their voice of equality.
To have the freedom and ability to march for women today, I am grateful.
