China & the Harbin Ice Festival  4th Jan 2019 (14 days) This trip of a lifetime is packed with wonderful sights! In Beijing, you will see the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, experience life in the old Hu-Tong area in a rickshaw and have lunch with a local family; you will travel to Xian on the bullet train to see the Terracotta Warriors. In Shanghai visit a traditional water town, the famous Bund on the waterfront with its dramatic skyline on one side and colonial buildings on the other (best viewed on our included Huang Po River cruise). We include evenings at the Peking Opera, the magnificent Tang Dynasty folklore show in Xian and the astounding world-famous Shanghai acrobats. #travelphotography #icefestival #nevertoold #holidays #traveler #traveling #retired #onetraveller #travelgram #travel #adventure #photooftheday #youngatheart #china #over50 #travelingram #vacation #traveller #instatravel #holidaytime #holiday #travelling #beijing

Harbin, China. Ice festival. It was -45 degrees celsius. About a square kilometre of structures made from ice, up to 15 stories tall that you can walk on! #torontophotographer #photography #coreywright #asia #icefestival #china #harbin #photographer

So it's still not really spring... if it's going to be winter for ever at least do it in style like they do in Harbin! The biggest Ice and Snow festival in the world takes place each year in northern China, in the city of Harbin. Freezing temperatures of down to -25 degrees centigrade make ideal conditions for ice carvers and snow builders from around the globe to gather and create spectacular sculptures and impressive buildings. The festival began as a lantern carving competition in 1963 and has been an annual event since 1985. There are three main areas to the festival. Zhaolin Park is where the original lantern competition is still held. This is a fairly small venue and can be seen easily in an evening, with most competitors coming from the local area. Another venue is the Sun Island centre, containing sculptures made from snow but these aren't run of the mill snowmen. Expect everything from small intricate designs of Chinese characters to enormous monuments hundreds of metres long and several storeys high. The 14 square miles of parkland is open during daylight hours and requires several visits to see all the exhibits. The final venue is the most impressive. The Grand World of Ice and Snow is home to entire buildings made of ice cut from the nearby river. These are lit with multicoloured lights each night and many are lifesize replicas of famous buildings from other parts of the world. Visitors not content with just observing the buildings can often go inside them, and many have additional features such ice slides, skating rinks or sound and light shows to add to the fun. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival takes place every January. 🇬🇧 Harbin Ice & Snow Amusement World 2018, Harbin, China.
