Family Matters is a sitcom series that premiered on ABC, September 22, 1989 to May 9, 1997, before moving to CBS from September 19, 1997 to July 8, 1998. The show is a spin-off of "Perfect Strangers". Fun facts about Family Matters:
.Though it’s difficult to imagine the Winslow family without their nerdy neighbor, Steve Urkel was never intended to be a regular character on the show, let alone its main character. His introduction came about midway through the first season, and he was originally slated to appear in just a single episode. But the suspenders-wearing pre-teen was an instant hit with audiences, and his role was quickly beefed up to meet (and sometimes overindulge) audience demand.
.Upon completing its ninth and final season, Family Matters became the second longest-running American sitcom featuring a predominantly African American cast. The only show that ran longer? The Jeffersons, which ran for 11 seasons.
.Reginald VelJohnson and Kellie Shaygne Williams, who played Carl Otis Winslow and Laura Lee Winslow, respectively, are the only actors to appear in all 215 episodes of the series. Take that, Steve Urkel!
.By the time she left the show, Rosetta LeNoire, who played Estelle "Mother" Winslow, was 85 years old. She passed away in 2002 at the age of 90.
.Stars Reginald VelJohnson and Jaleel White both contributed to the series as writers. VelJohnson is credited with the story for "The Substitute Son" in season six and the teleplay for season eight's "The Brother Who Came to Dinner," while White created the stories for "Grandmama" and "Home Again" in seasons five and eight.
.Michelle Thomas played Myra Monkhouse for several seasons of Family Matters. Her battle with stomach cancer caused her to exit the show shortly before it was cancelled. Tragically, she passed away within a #tvhistory #familymatters #family #matters #tvshows #sitcom #blackexcellence #iconic #urkel #flashbackfriday #comedy #fbf
