Took me awhile to find Everyday we should be honoring and praying for our bothers and sisters. For they kept stronge and golden in one of the worst cultural genocides known to mankind. #peace #love #stillhere #orangetshirtday

Today is Orange Shirt Day. It's a day to honour survivors and all children affected by the residential school system in Canada. From 1870's -1990's over 150,000 First Nations children were FORCED through residential schools in order to "civilize" them. Over 3,000 died (hard to measure as many were undocumented). Children ripped from their families. Forced to forget their native languages. Abused in all senses, they were beaten, raped, and demoralized. Many tried to flee or commited suicide to escape. This didn't happen "a long time ago". The last residential schools closed in the late 90's! 75,000 people alive now are survivors. Each one of their lives mattered and matters. We owe them honour. Step back from your ingrained racial thoughts. None of these children deserved the treatment they received simply because they were FIRST NATIONS. If the system continued today, perhaps I too would have been forced in. We need to strive for reconciliation but most of all today, mourn for the loss of so much innocence. Today we honour all residential school survivors. #everychildmatters #orangetshirtday #orangeshirtday

When you buy a t-shirt for a good cause but you looks like wearing a potato bag. Quando você compra uma camiseta por uma boa causa, mas parece que está usando uma bolsa de batata. #allchildrenmatter #orangetshirtday #firstnation

Today is always an emotional day for all First Nations people & families. We can't change the damage of the past but as a nation we can come together and listen, learn, and move forward. Education is so important, before you are quick to judge anyone take time to understand everyone's story. The trauma of the Residential Schools is still ongoing, young children were taken from their families and told and taught that everything they knew was wrong. My grandmother being one of those children, were never the same when they returned home. And because of the abuse suffered, later in life she was unable to care for her children. The 60's scoop was the next traumatic event that happened to aboriginal people. I admire her unbreakable spirit and use that as my motivation everyday. Sending out love & prayers for everyone who has been affected. Proud to be apart of such a beautiful culture ❤️ #everychildmatters #orangetshirtday
