'Cover Girl and Girl of the Month: Sharon Tate'
"In Martin Ransohoff's seemingly jinxed film, Eye of the Devil, is a beautiful 22-year-old ash-blonde stunner called Sharon Tate. We think Miss. Tate is on the verge of big things to come. In this film she plays a young girl in a French Village who posseses strange and mysterious powers which she exercises over David Niven and Deborah Kerr. Director J. Lee Thompson believes that she will emerge from this film as a sensation. These things we have heard before, but this time we believe all we hear about Sharon, which is one of the main reasons why we decided to make her our 'Cover Girl' and 'Girl of the Month'. Sharon is now in a 7-year contract to Filmways, and is described by Thompson as: "A strange and haunting beauty. At once both very lovely and in an odd way also forbidding." David Niven says of her "She is quite extraordinary; talented, very beautiful and absolutely right for the part.". Sharon was 20 when she began auditioning for T.V parts in the States. But they were hard to come by and she ended up doing commercials. "I used to hitch-hike from my home in Los Angeles to the studios." she recalls "because I couldn't afford the Cab fare. I got lifts from truck drivers, delivery men, from anyone, in fact, who would stop.". And who wouldn't stop! Her big break came one day when producer Martin Ransohoff spotted her auditioning for a small part in the T.V series "Petticoat Junction". He put her under contract the same day. Sharon explains: "Marty came on the set, saw me, and said 'Sign that girl!' I thought he meant somebody else, I couldn't believe he was talking to me. I looked so awful. I was wearing an orange dress with big patch pockets and my hair was all over the place." For two-and-a-half years Filmways has groomed and molded her, placing her in small T.V rolls, wearing a black wig so she would not have been known. "I wasn't even given credits for the things I did," she sighs "but it was all for experience."
The Eye of the Devil, is her big chance.
